MY BUSINESS WAS MY DREAM AND PASSION……

THE MT. DORA MUSEUM OF SPEED & CLASSIC CAR STORE

I built the all new Art Deco Mount Dora Museum of Speed , so we could Share our hobby and a lifetime of antique collecting with the General Public… moving to Central FL. and opening for business in Mt. Dora mid-August 2001. Since we travel often to buy cars PLEASE, it’s always best to call in advance to clear your arrival (ESPECIALLY FOR WEEKENDS). If you’ve never been to Mount Dora, get out your Future Events Calendar….the town is a must see. A mandatory visit while near Orlando, it’s the home base for the Renniger’s “Antique Extravaganza Show(s)”, “Wooden Boat Show in Tavares” on Lake Dora, Ice House Theater, “Bicycle Rally”, “Christmas Parade & Walk”, “Plant Show”, “Art Festival”, “Spring Festival of Music” various Antique Car Shows, and “Crafts Fair”….it has been repeatedly listed Nationally in several magazine’s as “One of The Five Best Places to Retire.” The year long Special Events calendar garnishes a major turnout (allegedly a quarter million visitors per year), so Dora’s not your typical ‘small potato’ Central Florida town. Flower-laden, recently renovated Mount Dora is just 43 minutes N.W. of Orlando Airport. Many view it as the East Coast’s version of Carmel, California or a sleepy 1950’s New England Village. It not only offers the highest elevation in the State of Florida (184 ft. above sea level, whoa) but, visiting it is like taking a trip in a time machine back to ‘KINDER TIMES’. A vintage community loaded with Antique Shops / Fine Dining, Lake & Canal Cruises, Century old Architecture, Beautiful Inns / Bed & Breakfasts’, 26 Churches and some genuinely nice people….all this while residing in a picture perfect community. It’s surrounded by 1001 Fresh Water Lakes and large Oak trees, laden with Spanish Moss and cooler temperatures than So. Florida’s normal.
I decided it was the perfect place to ‘semi-retire’ and open a Car Museum , after an article appeared in Money magazine rating it as
One of the Top Five Places To Retire. It occurred to me that there was plenty of entertainment in town for the ladies but, nothing for the guys to do, except eat/drink….so, with it’s close proximity to the Orlando Airport, it was the perfect venue for a Car Museum. I designed the building in the 1940’s style of Art Deco and decided to share my lifetime collection with everyone who chose to come in ( we were only open by appointment when we were located in Jupiter, FL).

1962 GEBR-IHLE AMUSEMENT BUMPER CAR

Who can forget as a child, teenager or Adult your first ride in a Bumper car? They have all but totally vanished as vendors fear the lawsuits. You’ve heard of Dodgem and Lusse Brothers Bumper Cars (see one in our Museum) but, the rarest electric Bumper Car to be found in America is this German beauty by Gebr-Ihle used at “Kiddie-Land” in the Southeast corner of Melrose Amusement Park’s “Scooter” Exhibition, (near Chicago) Illinois from 1962 until the Park closed in 2009 (demolished in June 2010). A Costco Store now occupies the space. It is a dead-on replica of the now famous 1962 Corvette Roadster which went on to fame in the CBS TV Show “Route 66” with Martin Milner & George Maharis (10/7/60 – 3/21/64) and in collectible garages all across America. The 1962 Corvette is considered iconic “The Marilyn Monroe of ALL Cars” (Paul Neidermeyer – ‘Curbside Corvettes’).

Special Visit from Brendon Edgerton / Australia

Thanks to Brendan who stopped by to see us during his 300 Day Journey around the World in search of the rare, Lost Tucker. We were flattered by his efforts to see our Museum as he has covered every single Auto Museum, large and small, from San Francisco/ Seattle to Miami and Chicago in his quest to find and document every single one of the remaining Tucker Automobiles left in existence. Here he is, pictured surfing his specially designed Aussie Commodore (G.M.) “Blues Brothers” Cop Car. Thanks so much for coming to see us…and Good Luck in your Quest~~~!!
